If it’s a home game at Ford Field, the time is usually 1:00 PM ET for Sunday games. But if the NFL decides the Lions are a “national treasure” (which they are, in a chaotic, lovable way), they might get bumped to 4:25 PM ET or even the Sunday Night Football slot. That means the game starts when your bedtime was supposed to be. You will be tired at work on Monday. Worth it.
For away games, the time is set by the other team’s schedule. If they’re playing in Seattle, the game might start at 4:25 PM ET, which is 1:25 PM local time. Your brain will melt trying to do the math. Just type “Seattle vs Detroit time” into your browser. Technology is your friend.
Also, a public service announcement: the NFL loves to move games. If the Lions are playing a bad team, they might flex the game to a less popular time slot. But if the Lions are 5-0? Suddenly, every network wants a piece. You must check the schedule 24 hours before kickoff. Don’t be the person who shows up at noon for a 4:00 game. You’ll just sit in the parking lot, eating a cold pretzel, wondering where everyone is.
The Only Time That Actually Matters
Let’s cut to the chase. The real answer to “What time is the Detroit Lions playing today?” is: “It’s Lions time, baby.” It’s the time when you put on your lucky socks, pour a drink, and yell at a TV screen like it personally insulted your grandmother. The kickoff time could be 1:00, 4:00, or 8:20. The feeling is always the same—a blend of hope and existential dread.
So, do yourself a favor. Go to nfl.com. Look at the schedule. Set your calendar. Then, just tell your boss you have a “dentist appointment.” We both know you’re not going to that dentist. You’re going to watch the Lions either win by 30 or lose by a last-second field goal. And honestly? That’s the best time of all.
Now, go forth and find that start time. And remember: if you see a blue towel waving in the wind, that’s the signal. The Lions are playing. And you’re about to have a very good, very stressful day.
