Water freezing is a daily betrayal. It’s the reason your soda can explodes in the freezer when you forget it. It’s why your car doors won’t open, and you have to pour warm water on the handle—which then refreezes instantly and traps you forever.
But it’s also kind of magical. Without that magical 32°F transition, we wouldn’t have ice skating, snow days, or those satisfying videos of people throwing boiling water into -40°F air (it turns into snow immediately; great party trick).
So next time you see your windshield is a frosty canvas, remember: it’s just water doing its weird, clingy, volume-changing dance. Embrace the ice. Or angrily scrape it. Both are valid.
And if someone asks you, “At what temperature does water freeze?” just smile and say, “Cold enough to ruin your morning, but warm enough to keep the fish alive.” Then go inside and drink something hot.
