While San Diego leans into movies, Gamescom is the powerhouse for video games. It’s the largest gaming event on the planet, pulling in over 370,000 visitors every August. That’s like the entire population of Cleveland showing up to play demos.
Imagine walking into a convention center and hearing explosions from one hall, epic orchestral music from another, and the click of thousands of controllers. It smells like energy drinks and fresh plastic. And yes, people dress up as their favorite Mario or Zelda characters here too—but with more LED lights.

Why you should care
Even if you only play Candy Crush on the subway, Gamescom shapes the games you will play next year. That new Assassin’s Creed setting? Revealed here. The price drop for the PlayStation? Announced here.
It’s also a great reminder that gaming isn’t just for kids. You see families, grandparents, and couples in matching cosplay. It’s like a county fair, but with better storytelling.
