Watch a Robin tilt its head. It looks like it’s judging you. Actually, it’s listening for worms underground. Auditory worm hunting. That’s hardcore.
Towhees have a habit of kicking leaves with such force they fall over. Seriously. They lose their balance and do a little bird-splodge. It’s adorable. I’ve seen it. I cackled.
And the Black-headed Grosbeak will sometimes stand on a branch and sing for five minutes straight. No breaks. It’s a one-bird concert. The neighbors love it. Or they don’t. No one tells a Grosbeak to stop.
Why You Should Care (Even If You’re Not a “Bird Person”)
These birds are messengers of spring. When you see a Robin with a fat orange belly, winter is over. Boom. Hope has landed. They’re also garden helpers. They eat slugs, bugs, and snails. Free pest control with a soundtrack.
They’re also surprisingly smart. Some robins recognize individual humans. They learn who water-drains the birdbath. They will stare at you until you fill it. Passive-aggressive royalty.
