Let's get one thing straight: stink bugs are jerks. They don't bite, but they crash your home, emit a smell that reminds you of burnt cilantro mixed with old socks, and they're stubborn. Peppermint, on the other hand, is the overachiever of the herb world—it smells amazing, soothes your stomach, and apparently, bugs hate it.
Research suggests that the menthol in peppermint oil overloads a stink bug's sensory receptors. Imagine you walk into a room, and someone blasts a trumpet directly into your ear—that's basically what menthol does to their antennae. It confuses them, and confused bugs tend to scram.
But here's the kicker: peppermint isn't a magic wand. It works best as a deterrent, not a massacre. You won't see stink bugs drop dead like in a bad action movie. Instead, they'll just think, "Ugh, this place reeks of mint," and find a less obnoxious window to crawl through.
DIY Mint Spray – Does It Actually Work?
I mixed a few drops of 100% peppermint oil with water and a squirt of dish soap (because soap helps the oil stick to surfaces). Then I sprayed it around my windowsills, door frames, and that one crack under the kitchen sink where stink bugs seem to hold secret meetings.
For a week, I felt like a genius warlock. I saw fewer bugs near the sprayed areas, and the ones that did show up seemed annoyed, hesitating before entering. But—and this is the irony—I noticed that if I missed a spot, they'd still march right in like they owned the place. Consistency is key, folks. You can't spray once and then binge-watch Netflix while the bugs throw a party.

Also, a heads-up: don't spray peppermint directly on your plants. I learned this the hard way when my basil looked like it had been through a chemical peel. Peppermint oil is potent, and it can burn leaves. Stick to doors and windows, okay?
