Here’s a little story for you. My friend Sarah found a box of “lavender Epsom salts” from 2019 under her sink. The salts were fine, but the added fragrance had turned. It smelled more like old potpourri than calming lavender. That’s a hard pass.
If your Epsom salts have added essential oils, perfumes, or colorings, check the smell. If it’s gone funky or rancid, toss them. The mineral part is fine, but that artificial “relaxation scent” will ruin your zen vibe.
The Great Water Test
Want a quick check? Pour a tablespoon of your questionable salts into a glass of warm water. Give it a stir. If they dissolve completely and the water looks clear (or faintly cloudy), you’re golden. If they refuse to dissolve and leave a gritty sludge, they’ve absorbed too much moisture.
That gritty sludge is still safe, but it won’t dissolve easily in your bath. You’ll be sitting on little sandy bits, which is about as relaxing as stepping on a Lego. Best to just buy a fresh bag.
