Stick around for a few years, and the money gets a little friendlier. After about three to five years, a postman can expect to earn between £27,000 and £30,000. That’s the point where you stop flinching at the petrol pump.
This is the sweet spot. You know your round by heart. You know which houses have grumpy dogs and which ones leave out mince pies at Christmas. That local knowledge is gold, and it pays a little better.
Think of it as the “Harry Potter delivery phase.” You’re not the new kid anymore, but you’re not quite Dumbledore with the mailbag. You’re reliable, and the modest pay rise reflects that.
The Overtime Angle
Here’s where things get interesting. Royal Mail runs on parcels now, not just bills. If you want to earn more, there’s loads of overtime available, especially around Black Friday and Christmas.

Work an extra shift on a Sunday, and you can bump your pay to over £35,000. Imagine that. You can earn an extra £200 a week just by sorting through boxes of awkwardly shaped cat litter. It’s honest graft.
But be warned: your feet will ache. You’ll dream about red vans. Still, for some, that extra cash is the difference between a holiday in Cornwall and a holiday in the garden shed.
