If you’re stuck at the rink with dull skates, use a sharpening stick or a hand stone. It’s a quick fix—just a few light strokes to knock off a burr. It won’t replace a pro job, but it saves a game.
Also, dry your blades thoroughly after every skate. Rust is the enemy of sharpness. A damp towel and a few seconds will buy you an extra skate or two between sharpenings. Your wallet thanks you.
And for the love of hockey, don’t share skates. That’s gross. And the person before you probably had a different hollow.
