You can totally see the difference. He’s a little taller, a little more confident, and his traps are even more elaborate. He’s graduated from “accidentally leaving a nail on the stairs” to “electrocuting a guy while a choir sings.” That’s the growth of a nine-year-old mastermind.
Fun fact: Macaulay Culkin was actually ten when filming the first movie, and twelve for the second. But in the universe of the McCallisters, he stays eight and nine. Actors age, but movie kids? They’re frozen in time. (Unless you’re Harry Potter, but that’s another story.)

Here’s the kicker: even though the movie says he’s eight, nobody—and I mean nobody—remembers that detail. We all think of him as like, “a little kid.” I’ve heard people swear he’s six. I’ve heard people say he’s ten. It’s hilarious that the most famous fact about Kevin is the one we all collectively ignore.
Why Shrek 2 Is Better Than the Original
Maybe it’s because he acts so mature. I mean, he orders a cheese pizza, he shaves, he handles a pair of burglars better than most adults handle a Monday morning. He’s the ultimate childhood power fantasy. So our brains upgrade him to a slightly older age to make the fantasy feel more believable.
But no. The cold, hard truth is that Kevin McCallister, the boy who single-handedly defended his home, was a tiny, terrified, brilliant eight-year-old. And that makes his victory even sweeter, doesn’t it?
