Maybe you got a little trigger-happy with the shock treatment. Or perhaps a batch of pool tabs melted faster than ice cream on a July sidewalk.
It happens to the best of us! The key is to test the water first with reliable strips or a liquid kit. Target range is 1–3 parts per million (ppm)—anything above 5 ppm is officially a no-go zone for fun.
Let the Sun Do the Heavy Lifting
This is the laziest, most satisfying method: sunlight naturally breaks down chlorine. UV rays are like tiny, hungry Pac-Men gobbling up those extra molecules.
Just remove the pool cover on a bright, sunny day. For every hour of direct sun, you can drop free chlorine by 1–2 ppm. Drink a lemonade, flip a burger, and let Mother Nature clean your pool for you—sweet deal, right?
Add Some Hydrogen Peroxide (Yes, Really)
If you’re impatient (no judgment!), grab a bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide from the drugstore—it’s a chlorine neutralizer that’s gentle on pool liners. Pour in one quart per 10,000 gallons of water for every 10 ppm you need to drop.
Be careful not to overdo it, or you’ll be adding more chlorine later. But done right, this turns that chemical monster into harmless water and oxygen. Poof! Your pool becomes a soothing, spa-like oasis in minutes.
