Sometimes the smell is only in hot water—and that’s actually “good” news. Heat triggers a chemical reaction in your water heater’s anode rod, which can produce the gas. If it’s only hot water, you might just need a new rod. If it’s both hot and cold, you’re dealing with bacteria in the well itself—a slightly bigger, but still doable, problem.
