Look for jobs that ask for a “Design Assistant” role at a small furniture store or a staging company. These often value energy and taste over a degree. You learn on the job, handling pillows and paint swatches.
Start an Instagram page. Just post photos of spaces you love, with your own captions explaining why the curtain rod is too low. People will notice your opinions. You become a voice before you become a professional.
When you talk to a potential client (or boss), don’t say “I don’t have a degree.” Say, “I have a trained eye and a ton of practical experience.” Show them your Instagram, your friend’s remodeled bedroom, and your own crazy-painted wall. That’s your resume.
The chill truth about it all
The design world is incredibly open to outsiders. Why? Because great design isn't about formulas. It’s about empathy. Can you listen to a person and figure out what makes them feel at home?
A degree is a piece of paper. Your taste is a living thing. So start moving furniture around. Break a few “rules.” The only thing standing between you and a career in interiors is your own couch, waiting for a fresh layout. Go move it.
