Let’s be real: nobody argues whether an apple is a fruit. But dates look mysterious. They’re brown, wrinkly, and grow in bunches like grapes. People get suspicious.
The word “date” doesn’t help. It sounds like a thing you eat in a calendar. “I have a date with a date” is a terrible pun, but I’m not sorry.
Also, dates are dried more often than fresh. Drying changes texture and makes them seem less fruity. But a raisin is still a grape. A dried plum is still a plum. A date is still a fruit.
The Vegetable Conspiracy
Some folks insist a date is a vegetable because it’s in savory Middle Eastern dishes. Tagine with lamb and dates? That must be a veg, right? Wrong. Pineapple on pizza is still fruit. Context doesn’t redefine botany.
Fruit and vegetable are not scientific categories anyway. “Vegetable” is a culinary term. In the kitchen, a tomato is a veg. In biology, it’s a fruit. Dates side with the tomatoes—botanical fruit, culinary chameleon.
