Your first and best bet is always the pharmacy. CVS and Walgreens are the reliable lifeguards of the holiday, keeping their doors open 24 hours in many locations. They operate as “holiday essential” stores, so you can find that bag of ice, a last-minute gift card, or a forgotten tube of wrapping tape.
Pro tip: Call ahead. Even within the same chain, holiday hours can vary wildly based on the local manager’s discretion. You don’t want to drive across town to find a “Closed for Christmas” sign on the door.
The Convenience Store Kingdom
7-Eleven, Wawa, and Sheetz are the unsung heroes of the holiday. They are almost always open, serving coffee, snacks, and the kind of dignity that comes from buying a frozen pizza at 4 p.m. on December 25th. It’s a cultural experience—you’ll see other survivors in the aisles, exchanging knowing nods over the last bag of gumdrops.
These spots are perfect for grabbing a newspaper, a bottle of wine (check your local laws on Sunday sales), or a pre-made sandwich if the turkey is still defrosting. They are the low-key champions of convenience.
