First, let’s talk about the bidding war. It’s less like a cricket match and more like two posh blokes in Savile Row suits fighting over the last packet of Hobnobs at a charity auction. Sky Sports and the BBC are the usual suspects, but now you’ve got Amazon Prime, DAZN, and even Netflix sniffing around like they’ve just discovered cricket exists. Spoiler: Netflix will probably turn it into a drama series called “The Sticky Wicket” with a sad soundtrack.
The surprising fact? The rights cost more than a Nando’s for the entire England squad over a decade. We’re talking north of £200 million. That’s roughly the GDP of a small island nation—or enough to buy every member of the Royal Family a lifetime supply of corgis. And yet, the broadcasters still punt on, because we Brits love watching grown men run between sticks while wearing ridiculous hats.
The Three-Headed Beast of Viewing
Here’s the real joke: the final deal might be split into three separate packages. That means to watch every ball, you’ll need a Sky subscription, a BBC iPlayer login, and a VPN to access some dodgy streaming service that charges you by the minute. It’s like paying for three different umbrellas in a rainstorm—and still getting soaked.
For example, the knockout matches could go to subscription services, while the group stages end up on free-to-air. This is great if you love the thrill of a cliffhanger, but terrible if you just want to see India choke against Ireland in the drizzle. By the time you find the right channel, the match is over, and you’ve accidentally subscribed to a gardening channel.
