Oh, the glorious list! It’s longer than your aunt’s Facebook posts about essential oils. We’re talking:

Pain relievers (Tylenol, Advil). Cough and cold stuff (NyQuil, that green goo that tastes like minty regret). Allergy meds (Claritin, Zyrtec). Antacids (Tums, because spicy wings are a lifestyle).

And let’s not forget the absurdly specific ones: head lice treatment, hemorrhoid cream, sleep aids. Basically, if it’s embarrassing to talk about at a party, it’s probably OTC.

The Sneaky Grey Area

Here’s where I mess with your brain a little. Some drugs are behind the counter but still OTC. Whaaaat?

Yes. In the US, you’ll find things like pseudoephedrine (the good decongestant in Sudafed) behind the pharmacy counter. You have to show ID and sign a log. But it’s still OTC. It’s called a “behind-the-counter” (BTC) drug. It’s the rebellious teenager of the medicine world—not quite prescription, but not fully unsupervised.

Why? Because people used to cook it into meth. So now you have to prove you’re just really, really stuffed up and not running a basement lab. Sorry, breaking bad fans.
