Most pediatricians—yes, those people with the little hammers and intimidating calm—say 8-year-olds need about 9 to 11 hours of sleep. Do the math. If they have to be up at 7 AM for school… that means bedtime is somewhere between 8 PM and 9 PM.
I know. It sounds painful. You just cleaned up dinner, you haven’t watched your show yet, and suddenly the house is supposed to be quiet? But here’s the trick: treat it like a moving target, not a prison sentence.
The 8 PM Rule (And When to Cheat)
For most 8-year-olds, 8 PM is the sweet spot. It’s late enough that they’ve had their homework, bath, and a tiny bit of screen time (okay, maybe 20 minutes of Minecraft). But it’s early enough that they won’t turn into a hangry gremlin by 10 AM the next day.
But—and this is key—life happens. Is it a Friday? Did they have a massive soccer game? Is there a sleepover looming? You can push it to 8:30 PM without the world ending. Just don’t push it to 9:30. That’s when the real meltdowns begin.
