So, when did GTA 5 drop? Technically, 2013. But spiritually, it’s still dropping. The game is a living document of the early 2010s. The radio stations play Rihanna and Kendrick Lamar like it’s 2013. The cellphones in the game are flip-phones and early smartphones. It’s frozen in amber, yet it’s constantly updated.
That’s the magic. You can load up GTA 5 today and experience the exact same satire of 2013 culture, but you can also drive a flying Delorean from Back to the Future that someone modded in. It’s a museum with a go-kart track inside. So, next time someone asks you "When did GTA 5 drop?", just smile and say, "It kind of hasn't stopped dropping yet." And that, my friend, is the coolest part of all.
