The team was originally known as the Boston Patriots, but later changed their name to the New England Patriots in 1971. This was a clever move, as it helped them appeal to a wider audience across the region. I mean, who wouldn't want to support a team that represents an entire region rather than just one city?
The Patriots have a rich history, with their first game dating back to 1960. They were part of the American Football League (AFL) back then, but later joined the National Football League (NFL) in 1970. It's like they were the new kid on the block, but quickly became a force to be reckoned with.
