If you want to find Charles with a genuine smile, head to Highgrove. This is his private country home in Gloucestershire. It’s where he goes to escape the chaos of London.
Where does King Charles III live now?
Highgrove is famous for one thing: its insane organic garden. Charles grows his own vegetables, talks to his bees, and even has a wildflower meadow. He once said he feels “closer to God” while digging in the dirt.
Quirky detail: He has a special “stumpery” garden made entirely of upside-down tree roots. It looks like a hobbit village designed by a mad botanist. Tourists pay to see it, and they leave confused but impressed.
Don’t forget the highlands
Charles also spends chunks of time in Scotland. His official Scottish home is the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. But his real Scottish hideaway is a tiny, remote estate called Birkhall.
Birkhall is where he and Queen Camilla go to be normal-ish. They walk the hills, cook simple meals, and avoid the press. He even has a private bothy (a rustic hut) where he chops wood and reads poetry. Very Bear Grylls with a crown.
And then there’s Sandringham. This is the Queen’s old Christmas home, but Charles visits it for holidays. He loves the pheasant hunting and the huge, draughty fireplaces. Plus, he can feed his rescue dogs—Jack Russell terriers—scraps from the royal table.
