Honestly, it’s both. The movie is a masterpiece of digital animation for 2004, but it also has that uncanny valley thing where everyone looks like a slightly melted wax version of a human. But knowing that Tom Hanks is behind every single face makes it infinitely more entertaining. You start watching the Hobo and think, “That’s just Tom after a bad caffeine day.”
So, the next time someone asks you who Tom Hanks plays in The Polar Express, you can answer with confidence: He plays everyone. He’s the boy, the conductor, the ghost, the hobo, Santa, and the dad. He’s basically the cast of a one-man Christmas play, and we are all just lucky passengers along for the ride.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to watch the movie again just to count how many times Tom Hanks blinks. Spoiler alert: it’s always exactly one Hanks blinking at a time. Creepy. Beautiful. Totally Hanks.
