Let’s talk about what a federal holiday actually means. It’s a day when government offices, banks, and the post office officially close. Christmas, New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving—those are the biggies. Good Friday? It’s not on that exclusive list.
But here’s where it gets weird. Many states observe Good Friday as a state holiday. That means state government buildings shut down, but the feds—and by extension, the post office—stay open. Confused yet? Don’t worry, I am too, and I write about this stuff.
The USPS follows federal guidelines, not state ones. So unless your local postmaster is feeling particularly generous, they’ll be stamping parcels and sorting mail. Probably.
What About Mail Delivery?
If you’re waiting for a check or that new book you ordered, here’s the good news: Mail delivery will happen on Good Friday. Letter carriers will be out in their little shorts, braving the elements to bring you bills and junk mail. It’s almost poetic.
But don’t expect any special treatment. It’s a regular delivery day. No holiday cheer, no extra cookies from your mailman. Just the usual pile of envelopes and probably a catalog for things you don’t need.
So, if you’re hoping to send something that must arrive by Easter Sunday? You’d better hustle. Priority Mail Express might get it there, but it’s a gamble. Good Friday is not a day for miracles—that’s what Sunday is for.
