A direct flight from London Gatwick to Barbados takes about 8.5 hours. That’s enough time to watch the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy (extended editions, naturally) and still have 20 minutes to panic about lost luggage.
From Glasgow? Add an hour. From Belfast? You might as well bring a good book and a spare pair of socks. It’s a long haul, but the reward is instant sunshine.
Fun fact: If you rowed from Land’s End to Jamaica, it would take you roughly 90 days. You’d burn about 500,000 calories. You’d also probably get eaten by a shark. So, book the flight.
The Islands: Not a Monolith
The Caribbean is big. Really big. It’s not one little dot on a map. Barbados is the closest major island to the UK. It’s about 4,200 miles from London. That’s your quickest tropical fix.
Want to go to Trinidad? That’s a bit further, about 4,400 miles. It’s the difference between ordering a Large and an Extra Large pizza. Still delicious, but you’ll wait a little longer.
The farthest mainland-adjacent islands, like Aruba or Curaçao, sit near 4,700 miles. That’s an extra 45 minutes of turbulence and bad movie choices. Worth every second.
