Here’s where it gets personal. Your softener probably works one of two ways. The old-school kind is a timer-based system. It regenerates on a set schedule, say every three days, whether it’s full or not. Kind of like changing your oil on a calendar date, even if you barely drove.
The newer, smarter kind is a demand-initiated system. This little genius measures how much water you actually use and only regenerates when it really needs to. It’s like your fridge telling you, “Hey, we’re out of milk,” rather than you guessing wrong.
If you’ve got a big family that loves long showers and loads of laundry, your softener might regenerate every single night. If it’s just you and a cat, it might stretch to once a week. Your water usage is the boss here.

What about the salt?
You might notice that regeneration uses salt—and a lot of it. A typical cycle can gulp down 20 to 80 pounds of salt per month. That’s why you’ll see those big bags of salt at the grocery store. You’re basically feeding your softener a salty snack so it can work hard for you.
Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a chemist. Just check the salt level every few weeks. If it’s half empty, toss in a bag. Your softener will thank you by regenerating properly.
